Jack's frequent wrestling with issues of faith and practice were some what i was going after here. It was said that he almost met Thomas Merton, the Catholic Trappist monk who shared the same editor that Kerouac did. Both shared a love for Eastern forms of prayer and the richness of Catholicism. Kerouac's early negative associations with the often morbid & controlling Catholic Church of his youth was something he "worked through" as his pagan philosophies and approaches began to unravel later in life.
