about

An inventory song.
Another year of the good dying young.
Another year of bloodshed, alienation, & divisive-ness...
Another year of dwelling in darkness but needing to "see a great Light."

Mercy & Grace. We seek God's near-ness, the elixir to our cold spirits.
I am convinced He "is there," even when He seems most absent. Whether our confidence is great, barely there at all, or shredded beyond belief, prayer, song, & artistic utterance give substance to our hearts deep yearnings.

And community. We also have each other. Community, however stumbling in it's practice, is all we have to bind up our wounds with.

In Advent/Christmas season we remember: "Emmanuel. God with us."

lyrics

KISS THE YEARS AWAY words/music: bill mallonee

1. you say this one was a bear
well, may the new one come as a dove
you say this one here was full of grief
well, may the the next one be full of love
take only what you learned from it
and lay the rest in the grave
chorus tag:
and kiss...the years
and kiss...the years
kiss the years....a...way.

2. when every North-star of a truth
is never firmly fixed
and terra firma is a slippery slope
with yet another Christmas
and if that choir of angels
don't show up to stay

3. now babe, all i've got are miracles
when it comes to you and I
and every river that we cross
knits your heart more to mine
and all those rivers they run to the sea
where love has the final say...

4. when there are no plumb lines that's snaping true
and every measuring rod is wrecked
every calculation a half truth
all logarithms suspect
with the Spirit you gotta close your eyes
to see a different way

5. now, hatred is a weed within
and our hearts? they seem to freeze
and wars? well, we got that one down
call it our specialty
sometimes all the final words
are a baby in the hay

7. brother, you may be a sinner
or you may be a saint
but everyone's a flower
in need of soil & sun & rain
The Lord? He keeps the garden
using suffering as his spade

8. So, travel light, enjoy the view
and try to do what's right
find that special friend so true
to get you through the night
help your brothers & sisters
along the dark highway
